It doesn’t really matter what they said or who said it, but something in me reacted in panic. I was out running errands, and, as I was driving around town, I couldn’t stop thoughts of feeling unloved, misunderstood, and unappreciated, along with fears of being alone to deal with fractured relationships.

Satan and his demons have been in my thoughts lately—I’ve been mostly dismissive of the power that they have. But as I realized how these negative thoughts were taking over my emotions, I had to reconsider. Where were these thoughts coming from? Were they coming from some evil spirit whispering in my ear? Were they coming from my own fallen human mind? The way those thoughts were taking over my thinking and the way I was feeling total despair led me to the conclusion that there was indeed a demonic element to this.

Thanks for reading God Songs Remembered! Finally, by the time I returned to my parked car, I decide to resist those thoughts and emotions and overcome that spirit. I said over and over, “Jesus is Lord. Jesus is Lord. Jesus is Lord.” I said it in a spirit of submission and acceptance, but also in a spirit of determination to overcome my negative thoughts. Those words had an immediate effect. If they chased a demon away, I would not be surprised. If they simply changed my own thought processes, I’m fine with that. In any case, reminding myself that Jesus is Lord of all calmed my worries and enabled me to drive home in a much more peaceful state of mind than I had when I started out.

Above All (by Michael W. Smith) is the song that came to my mind as I was driving home. YouTube. <a remembers—that recalls—particular words and songs just when I need them in difficult moments. It happens all the time, and it gives me pause at the way God’s Word, stored in my heart, saves the day over and over and over.

In particular, I was reminded that Jesus knew what it was to be “rejected and alone, like a rose trampled on the ground.” My feelings, while natural, had to be overcome. I had to realize that many people in the world experience far more despair than I was feeling. Jesus had experienced those feelings, too, but He has power over those feelings and over the people and circumstances that cause them.

I turned on a Christian radio station then, and heard Pastor Adrian Rogers finishing up a sermon. He was quoting from 2 Timothy 3, verses 14-15: “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14-15 NKJV)

The part “from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures” reminded me of all the times in childhood that I would sit down and read my Bible. At least by 6th grade, I had made a decision that I would read the whole Bible, and I worked hard at getting that done. I was an avid Bible reader and often wondered how people who don’t enjoy reading could ever internalize Scripture. How could they ever know what God wanted them to do if they weren’t reading His Word? How could they have the strength and assurance to get through life without hiding His Word in their hearts? That is still a mystery to me.

I suppose I should be thankful for all the problems and worries in my life because they have always driven me straight back to God’s Word and/or to Christian songs that express Biblical truths.

Jesus is Lord. He is “Above All”. He is above every situation and above every spirit that attempts to interfere in our peace and in our relationship with Him.

                                               Copyright 2025 Kitty Barrera. during a time of religious persecution in Europe. The story behind the hymn can be found here. Even after reading that account, very few people will truly be aware of what Protestants endured during the Reformation, beginning in Germany in the 16th century and gradually spreading across Europe. It is a fact of history that the Catholic Church, in tandem with the governments they controlled, engaged in systematic persecution and murder of those who could not in good conscience adhere to Catholic teachings. It was in response to that persecution that Luther wrote the song about clinging to God as a “fortress” against those who wished to do harm to Protestant believers.

Due to my research into my own family history, I have learned about many ancestors who fled Europe because of religious persecution. They included Huguenots, Walloons, Palatines, the Schwarzenau Brethren (Dunkards), Lutherans, and Presbyterians, among others. Specifically, they were Peter Entsminger, who escaped persecution in Alsace-Lorraine and went to Pennsylvania; Philippe Du Trieux, who fled to Amsterdam from current-day Belgium and then to New Netherland (New York); the Crockett family (Croquetaine), who fled to Ireland from France and later went to Virginia; John de la Chaumette (Shumate), who fled to England from France and later settled in Virginia; the Brasseure family, who also fled France and later settled in Virginia and Maryland; and the Noells, who fled France for the Netherlands and then went to Virginia. There were others, such as the Schneiders, Spahrs, and Kuntzes, who fled persecution in their homelands in Switzerland and Germany, along the Rhine River, later settling in Pennsylvania, followed by relocation to western Virginia. If you’ve followed any of the links above, you can begin to understand the dire situation faced by these Christians who just wanted to worship in the way they believed was most honoring to God. It should be noted that the French government, in 1985, apologized to the descendants of Huguenots, but I do not know if the Catholic Church or any other country has made such an apology to descendants of Protestants who had to flee persecution in Europe.

Thanks for reading God Songs Remembered! href="https://www.blueletterbible.org/faq/don_stewart/don_stewart_90.cfm">this page. Based on the insights provided, we can see that the murder of Charlie Kirk was not caused by God, but it was allowed by God for His own reasons. The same must be true for those Protestants killed during the Reformation. Satan cannot kill any Christian without God’s permission. Satan is not equal to God. Could it have been God’s plan to establish Protestants in America? It seems fairly obvious to me that it was.

Only God is omnipotent. Only God is omnipresent. Only God is omniscient. Satan is none of those things. Satan is a created being. He is limited. All fallen angels (demons) are limited. Christians should not fear them. If you look at scripture and at the lyrics to the song, you will see that we have power over Satan and his demons. Non-Christians do not have that power.

So what does Martin Luther say about Satan in “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”?

He is our ancient foe.

He wants to do us “woe”.

His craft and power are great.

He hates us.

He has no equal on earth.

His demons want to “undo” us.

Does Martin Luther give us a solution in the song? Yes, of course. He rightly says—

God is our fortress.

God never fails.

He’s our helper even with mortal ills prevailing.

We cannot counter Satan in our human strength.

Christ is on our side, and he is the same for all time.

Christ will win the battle for us.

The Word of God is more powerful than any earthly power.

We have the Holy Spirit on our side.

Though we may lose our possessions, our family, even our life, God’s truth will abide forever.

Conclusion

I find myself hoping that the lyrics can be reworked with more modern language so that people are more cognizant of what they are saying. Since the syntax is a bit stilted, we may gloss over the words without thinking. The song is powerful, and I’m glad I’ve taken the time to look at it carefully. When you sing it, remember the millions of Protestants who lost their lives in the Reformation due to religious persecution. Pondering that may help you face the challenges in your own life. Just remember that it is only through Christ within you that you can triumph over evil.

For more insight into the activity of Satan and demons, this interview might help.

Thanks for reading God Songs Remembered! years old. As time goes by, the lyrics sound more and more awkward to us because English, like all languages, changed over time. I suppose that is the reason you seldom hear this song today.

Sounds Like Reign has a very nice a capella rendition. I also like the Spotify versions by Alan Jackson and Tennessee Ernie Ford. One thing you’ll notice is that these singers all do the song differently, choosing to modify or leave out some portions. My discussion here will focus on the first and third verses.

Thanks for reading God Songs Remembered! Lord’s Prayer1 as a guide or an outline, not a recitation, was helpful. Let me add that before you begin, you should heed Psalm 46:10 and be still. Then, as you pray, expand each part of the Lord’s Prayer depending on your life situation. This can easily take an hour.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (In your own words, acknowledge the Lord’s sovereignty and holiness.)

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (In your own words, ask for God’s will in specific situations, both personally and globally.)

Give us this day our daily bread. (In your own words, remind the Lord what your needs are and ask that your needs be met—for today.)

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (Confess your specific sins to the Lord. Name them one by one. Recognize where you need to offer forgiveness to others.)

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (In your own words, ask God to help you avoid specific temptations. Ask for protection from specific evil forces, whether human or spiritual.)

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (In your own words, affirm God’s power and sovereignty and give Him honor and glory. Submit to Him.)

One more thing: You probably already keep a journal or prayer notebook, but if not, I suggest you do that. It’s very helpful to be able to go back and see where your prayers were effective, and then reflect on why they were or were not.

“That calls me from a world of care And bids me at my Father’s throne”

This is certainly scriptural. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

“Make all my wants and wishes known.”

This is also scriptural. Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” James 4:2 says, “[Y]e have not, because ye ask not.” Whatever it is you want, bring that request to God. If it brings honor to Himself, he will probably do it, and He might even do it just to remind you that He is listening. I’ve asked for parking places before. I’ve asked for rain to stop and other seemingly minor things. Most of the time, I have found that God was gracious in answering those prayers. The more you pray, the more discernment you will have about what requests to bring. Once upon a time, I demanded something of the Lord that he then gave me—almost immediately. Later, that very thing brought me suffering. So, be careful what you ask for.

“In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief, And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!”

Do you remember what Matthew 26:36-39 told us about Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to the Crucifixion? Here it is:

“Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. . . [He] began to be sorrowful and very heavy. . . And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (KJV)

If Jesus turned to prayer in his time of distress and grief, shouldn’t we? Obviously, worry, anger, depression, complaining, drinking, eating, and a host of other behaviors will not help us, but prayer certainly will.

The third verse says:

“Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!”

I think we can all agree that the words of this verse are in harmony with scripture. Of course God is true and faithful. Of course He wants to bless us. Of course He wants us to seek Him, believe Him and trust Him. Many verses affirm those ideas. The words “I’ll cast on Him my every care,” are definitely affirmed in I Peter 5:7, which says, “Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.” They are also affirmed in Psalm 55:22 - “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

CONCLUSION

You might think about prayer. You might look at Bible verses about prayer. You may read books about prayer or sing songs about prayer. You can even speak a few hasty words and hope the Lord is listening. But I think we should take the title of this song to heart—SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER— and actually pray for an hour every day. If we do that, I think it will indeed be “sweet”. Even better, it will be effective. If all Christians truly prayed an hour every day, just imagine how the world could be changed.

I’d like to add that there is nothing magic about an hour. However, you’ll find that the longer the time is that you spend talking to the Lord, the more your conversation will change. He will draw closer and closer, and you will hear Him better and better.

1

Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

Copyright 2025 Kitty Barrera. One year I was the president of the group, the purpose of which was to learn about missions. We had an adult leader, but I had to help plan each meeting. The YWA song was “O Zion, Haste!” (Link is to Spotify.) This is not a song that most people know; it’s seldom sung in church. However, the girls in YWA sang it often because it was a song about missions—about taking the Good News to everyone in the world.

Lyrics

O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling,
to tell to all the world that God is Light;
that He who made all nations is not willing
one soul should perish, lost in shades of night.

Refrain:
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace;
tidings of Jesus, redemption, and release.

The phrase “Publish glad tidings” particularly resonated with me. I guess that is one reason I feel compelled to write. The other verses are as important as the first, and the refrain is sung after each one. Please take a minute to read through the verses.

Behold, how many thousands still are lying,
bound in the darksome prison-house of sin,
with none to tell them of the Savior’s dying,
or of the life He died for them to win.

Proclaim to ev'ry people, tongue, and nation
that God, in whom they live and move, is love;
tell how He stooped to save His lost creation,
and died on earth that we might live above.

Give of thy sons to bear the message glorious;
give of thy wealth to speed them on their way;
pour out thy soul for them in prayer victorious;
O Zion, haste to bring the brighter day.

One year, the YWA annual “house party” was at Houston Baptist University. I was in 11th grade at that time. At the end of the session, there was an altar call for girls who felt led to surrender to Christian service, particularly missions. I felt led to do that, but I held back because I thought I wasn’t good enough. I have often wondered how different my life might have turned out if I had surrendered then—before I made so many mistakes.

Even though I went on with my life—college, teaching, marriage, motherhood, then divorce—I continued to have this gnawing feeling that I should be on the mission field. Finally, in 2003, I got the opportunity to go to Suriname as a teacher at a school for missionary children. The best part of that was not what I did there; it was the missionaries I got to meet and observe and occasionally assist. There were missionaries from several organizations and denominations, but the missionaries from World Team were the ones that had the most impact on my life, and, in my opinion, the most impact on the people of Suriname. My summary below tells what happened to one missionary as he was attempting to save the last Akurijos.

SAVING THE LAST AKURIJOS

The Akurijo People

Along with the Wayana, the Trio, and other Amerindian tribes, the Akurijo people lived a stone-age existence until the mid-twentieth century. Though the Wayanas and Trios later settled in villages, the Akurijos continued their hunter-gatherer, nomadic lifestyle into the 1970s. But even a lush tropical forest cannot sustain large groups of people all in one place, so the Akurijo broke up into five groups of approximately 10-20 people each and went their separate ways. They moved throughout the southern jungle in the upper regions of the Tapanahoni River, carrying their fire for warmth, cooking, and safety. Though they were a distinct group with a distinct language, little by little, contact was made with Christian missionaries and other tribes. Some of the Akurijos were adopted by the Wayanas or Trios and settled in their villages. Finally, there was only one Akurijo group unaccounted for. By 1959, Mission Aviation Fellowship arrived, and with the help of the Surinamese government, they built airstrips at various locations throughout the country. This initiative was known as Operation Grasshopper, and it allowed easier access to the interior of the rainforest. With this faster, easier access via small aircraft, the good news of Jesus Christ was preached, and many of the Amerindians had become Christians by 1963.

The Lytles

The Lytles were the World Team missionaries I met when I was in Suriname. They were from Florida and had been in Suriname since 1970, when they graduated from Trinity Bible College. Assigned as missionaries to the Wayana tribe, deep in the southeastern rainforest, Roy and Margaret told the Good News of Jesus Christ. They were not the only ones; others had come before them, and still others served with them. Churches were built, written language was developed, the Bible was translated into Wayana, and witch doctors were taught how to be church leaders. Part of their work also involved the Trio Indians. Christianity spread so fast among the Wayanas and the Trios that the Indians wanted to preach the gospel to other tribes, including the Akurijos. Knowing that one small group of Akurijos was still unaccounted for, Roy and some of the Indians set out into the jungle to search for them.

Irita

Irita was a young Akurijo mother with a twelve-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter, and they were all that was left of their group—the only group that had not been found. Irita’s husband had committed suicide by jumping out of a tall tree; now she alone had to protect and feed her children. She had no weapons since only the men knew how to make them. Naked and defenseless, she and her children foraged in the dense underbrush for whatever food they could find. One day, upon entering a small clearing, Irita was surprised to see a jaguar stalking her and her children. Knowing better than to run, Irita pulled her children close to her and stood, waiting for the awful moment when the jaguar would pounce. All of a sudden, a man bathed in light appeared between Irita and the jaguar. The jaguar turned and fled, and the man spoke to Irita. “Do not be afraid,” he said. “Wait here, for I am sending someone to tell you about Me.” Then he vanished.

Found

Shortly after that, Roy’s entourage happened upon Irita and her children, who were initially fearful. The Indians with Roy included an Akurijo man, and he communicated with Irita, who told the story of what had happened with the jaguar and the man who had appeared to save her. In Roy’s words: “The Indians got all excited and started shouting, ‘It was God! It was God! God protected her until we could get here to tell her about the Lord Jesus.’ The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I was awe-struck. As we made our way back through the jungle, the Indians were stretched out along the trail. I could hear them far ahead of me shouting out, ‘Ipok man Kan, ipokman Kan!’ (Very good is God! Very good is God!) That trail became an altar, and upon that altar, they were offering the sacrifice of praise to the Lord.”

Irita and her children made their home among the Trios, who cared for them and modeled the love of Christ. Irita and her children eventually became believers. As of 2005, Roy reported that only Irita’s daughter was still alive.

I know Roy has told this story often to church groups because so many people want to hear it. I have long thought it’s a story that needs to be published, but I am unaware if that has happened before now.

                            Copyright 2025 Kitty Barrera. I was thrilled to learn that visitors would receive a free music CD, and I have enjoyed listening to that CD many times over the years, especially a song sung by Charles Billingsley called Within the Veil. I had never heard it before, and I still have never heard it anywhere else. I don’t know if other people are familiar with the song or not, but it absolutely gives me chills, partly because of Billingsley’s voice, but mostly because of the ideas expressed. I believe Billingsley wrote the song with Cheryl Rogers. They are listed with the lyrics on the Genius.com website. You can hear a short excerpt there, but the whole performance is on Spotify, particularly on my playlist GodSongsRemembered. It is also available on YouTube.

Having taken a graduate level biblical studies course on the book of Exodus in 1995, I was familiar with the meaning of the “veil” mentioned in the song. Perhaps not everyone knows that the “veil” refers to part of the ancient Israelites’ Tabernacle and the later Jewish Temple. Because I understood the meaning of the veil, I found the song to be very profound, as it speaks of being in the very Presence of God Almighty.

The Israelites worshipped in the Tabernacle while they were wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, after Moses led them out of slavery in Egypt. God’s instructions for building this Tabernacle (a tent) and for worshipping there were very specific.

So what was the “veil”? The veil was a long curtain that separated the Holy Place, or Sanctuary, from the Holy of Holies. A helpful diagram can be found here. No one could enter the Holy of Holies except the High Priest once a year on the Day of Atonement. What was in the Holy of Holies? The Ark of the Covenant was there, and it held the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments, manna from the wilderness, and Aaron’s staff (an almond branch that had budded). It represented God’s Presence and was also known as the Mercy Seat. This is where the High Priest would enter yearly to make atonement for the sins of the people. He was the only person permitted to enter that space, but he had to come also with an atoning sacrifice for his own sins.

When Solomon had the Temple built in Jerusalem, this basic pattern was still followed, as it was also in the later Temple built by King Herod—the one in existence during the life of Christ.

Stunningly, when Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the Temple was supernaturally ripped from top to bottom, representing free access to God’s presence. Perhaps the Jewish people do not interpret it that way, but that is the way Christian scholars interpret it. We are not limited in our access to God as the Israelites or the Jews once were. We do not now need any priest except Jesus Christ in order to commune with Almighty God, but we do need to come with acknowledgement of our sin and a “sacrifice.” Only our faith in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for forgiveness of sin will suffice. Those who have trusted in Christ can go directly to God with their petitions and prayers, and certainly, the day will come in Heaven when we are literally in God’s presence. Try to imagine that.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

I had a dream years ago about going into the literal, physical presence of God. I don’t claim to have any secret knowledge; I can only tell you what my dream was. I dreamed He was in a large tent, seated high on some kind of platform, and there was a gentle breeze blowing as I walked before His throne and into His Presence. I remember my feeling of awe in the dream, and I remember I was welcomed. I felt no fear, just happiness.

Those who have accepted Christ have access to the Presence of God even today, but someday that Presence will be physical—more visible. It overwhelms me to think about that.

Contemplate the lyrics. In my opinion, the song is true to the concepts revealed in the Tabernacle and Temple and is scripturally sound. Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (KJV)

In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he stresses the value of spiritual songs by mentioning the “wisdom, teaching, and admonishing” they may provide. In my life, this has certainly been true. From a very young age, such songs have made a difference, and, in my Substack, I will write about many of them.

My plan is to start officially in September, but I am writing this short introduction because of an amazing coincidence. The sermon on Colossians that I heard in church this morning mentioned this very verse. That seemed like confirmation to me that I should go ahead and get started, even though I have had the intention to do this for a couple of months.

My earliest memory of being in church was about age three. We attended First Baptist Church in Orange, Texas. For some reason one particular Sunday stands out in my memory. I remember singing this song, which I have never heard anywhere else. Yet I remember it after all these years. Why is that? I remember the words we sang, which were slightly different from these; I remember the tune; and I remember the motions. I also remember the feeling of happiness and enjoyment of being in Sunday School with other children and caring teachers.

https://www.heavenwardhome.com/sacred-music-tracks/the-trees-are-gently-swaying

Another song we learned—and I do think it was the same day—was “Tick Tock,” a song about coming to Sunday School on time. Now the example in the video refers to “Sabbath School,” but I went to Sunday School, not Sabbath School. The other difference is the time mentioned. The song I learned said, “Time for Sunday School is half-past nine o’clock!” I share the video below because I like the way this lady presents the song. I do remember my teacher holding up a clock and moving the hands to show exactly what “half-past nine o’clock” looks like.

Sure enough, the following Sunday, I remember running (slightly) ahead of my parents as we entered the building. Straight ahead was a clock perpendicular to the wall, so you could not miss it. I checked the clock immediately. I knew what 9:30 was supposed to look like, and I was happy to be on time.

I have thought about these memories many times in my life, and I remember my feelings of joy. It certainly reminds me of Psalm 22:1 —”I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of Lord.” When my parents said we were going to Sunday School or to church, I was happy, and I think most kids are happy when their parents say that. But how often do parents say it? Time is precious, and time is fleeting. Parents, don’t miss the opportunity to have your children in Sunday School. I remember singing Psalm 22:1, but I cannot find the tune I remember, or I would post it. It seems that the tune has changed!

There have been times in my life when I had to go to church alone. It can be discouraging to go to church alone, especially in a new church.
